April 12, 2022
Dear friends,
First, just a heads-up that there’s Bible Study tomorrow (Wednesday) morning, but no Wednesday evening service this week!
It is Tuesday of Holy Week, and by now the Hosannas and festivity of Palm Sunday may already be forgotten. The demands and pace of life sweep us right along, to say nothing of our own sinful flesh, which would rather mark time according to the school calendar, or the farmer’s almanac, or our vacation schedule.
For all of that, it’s striking that the stock market closes on Good Friday. No one seems to know why. Maybe it’s a legacy from a more pious time. Maybe it’s superstition. Maybe it has something to do with the Passover.
In any case, you know how important the calendar is. How you order your time reflects your priorities. That is why the church keeps a calendar, why our time is ordered around the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Because Christ is our priority.
Keep that in mind the rest of this week. See what you can do to your daily schedule to remind yourself that it’s Holy Week. Read the Scriptures. Pray. Sing Holy Week hymns. Fast. Slow down and meditate on the holy sufferings of your Savior.
The reward for your work of faith and labor of love is nothing less than the blessing of God! He has promised to bless you who keep his Word, so keep it this week and pray for his Spirit to strengthen you in faith and love. Keep it this week, and learn thereby to keep it next week, and the week after that! Learn to fix your eyes on the cross of Jesus!
God bless and keep you,
Pr. Buchs
