What’s it for?

August 1, 2023

Dear Friends,

Without God, there’s no point.

This is a mystery that remains unresolved by the evolutionary thinkers of our world. What’s the point? How can we talk about good or bad, right or wrong, purpose and meaning if it’s all just a bunch of material stuff? What you do has no lasting significance. And even its momentary significance is completely subjective. If it’s all just the motion of particles, then there’s no such thing as love or joy.

But where there’s a designer, there’s a point. Where there’s a creator, there’s a purpose to creation.

God invites us to ask all along the way: “What’s it for?”

That’s an important question to ask regularly because it is easy to fall into a rut. It’s easy to lose sight of the purpose. Losing sight of the purpose means a downgrade for a human. It means just going through the motions, just acting by pure force of habit, behaving in an animal-like way. But we were created not only to have a purpose but to recognize purpose. We were created to be purposeful, just like our heavenly Father.

And so, you should ask – “What’s it for?”

Ask that about all the things you do. Ask it about the things you spend the most time and energy doing. Ask it about the things you take for granted, the things you assume you must do. Nothing’s off the table here. What’s it for? Do you know?

Then, take your instructions from Paul: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor. 10:31).

God bless and keep you,

Pr. Buchs
